Payîzok

The payîzok is the autumn song of the Kurdish pastoral tradition: sung when the flocks come down from the high pastures, the tents are folded and the year turns toward separation. Its fixed season gives the form its emotional register: departure, cooling love, the ache of distance, all set against the emptying mountains. Together with related seasonal and occasion-bound forms, the payîzok shows how tightly Kurdish song was once woven into the working year, and its imagery of leaving remains painfully current for a people that knows migration well. The form survives in recordings of the great dengbêjs and in modern revivals.
