Mihemed Şêxo (1948-1989), from the Qamişlo region, is remembered as the father of modern Rojava song. Working with little more than his voice and his oud-inflected melodies, he set a tone of dignified melancholy that still defines the region’s music: love and exile sung in the same breath. His short life and difficult circumstances only deepened his legend, and his recordings, rough as many of them are, remain constantly streamed and endlessly covered by younger singers across all parts of Kurdistan.
